Dom Somers counsellor

I have enjoyed living in and around beautiful Albury Wodonga for over 25 years.

I am a life-long learner. My formal education includes a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) and Diploma of Education from the University of Melbourne. I have also attained a Master of Social Work from Griffith University. I am usually in the middle of studying/training, or have my eye on the next learning opportunity.

I am a qualified Teacher (VIT) and registered Social Worker (AASW). My professional experiences have led me from teaching and welfare roles in high schools, to creating and running community engagement and mentoring programs in the not-for-profit sector. I have also provided counselling and case management services to people and families navigating high risk situations.

I have an interest in the building and strengthening of community. This has led me to provide therapeutic foster care for over 10 years. I have also enjoyed developing professional communities of practice, participating in advocacy groups and supporting grassroots community movements.

Over 15 years of experience in education and social services has helped to sharpen the values that guide my counselling practice, which include:

Diagnostic labels can be useful at times, but they also risk pathologising human responses to experiences people face. I don't believe that anyone is broken or in need of fixing, rather, responses that have helped us survive situations may no longer serve us.

To be seen and understood by another is a fundamental need we all share. I endeavour to provide both a physical space and a safe relationship to honour this authentic connection.

I acknowledge and celebrate the many ways that we are all different (culture, gender, sexuality, ability, religion, health etc). It is through our shared humanity that we can find a bond... and the rest is what makes life interesting.
